Why these five points?
Moving to S/4HANA is far more than a version upgrade. Success is determined less by the volume of technical work than by the decisions you make during planning.
Point 1: Take a full inventory of scope and legacy systems
Map modules, interfaces, batch jobs, reports, and user counts. Classify each item as "move as-is," "redesign," or "retire," and agree on scope with the business early.
Point 2: Start data migration with cleansing
Master data cleansing, not the migration itself, is usually the bottleneck. Identify duplicates and obsolete records, define the migration window, then migrate with tools such as LTMOM and BAPIs.
Point 3: Re-evaluate custom code and add-ons
Because S/4HANA simplifies the data model, treat custom code as a re-evaluation, not just a move. Check whether standard SAP or Fiori apps can replace it, and retire unused add-ons.
Point 4: Design parallel running and cutover
Define acceptable downtime, the parallel-running period, and rollback conditions in advance. Run rehearsals under production-like conditions.
Point 5: Build a realistic team, schedule, and budget
Assign a project manager with SAP expertise and key users with business knowledge early. When using external partners, verify their S/4HANA track record and industry understanding.
Summary
With sound planning and the right team, S/4HANA migration is an opportunity to significantly improve your business.
